Want to watch Mavericks? Want to win Mavericks surf contest?
Organizers are hoping that crowds don't overwhelm the sensitive environmental bluffs at Pillar Point and instead watch the Mavericks Surf Contest streaming live on the Web or at San Francisco's AT&T Park.

Two years ago, organizers pegged the weekday Mavericks crowd at 50,000. There were injuries on the water, as spectators in boats jockeyed for position, and on below the bluffs, where rocks rained down on fans, causing at least one serious injury.

Because the event is scheduled for a weekend this time around, the crowds could be even bigger Saturday.

The truth is there is little to see from the shore. The break is a half-mile out and it's difficult to find a good vantage point.

For those determined to brave the crowds, access to Princeton will be limited. Authorities plan to cordon off both the Airport Road and Prospect Street entrances into Princeton from Capistrano Road. Spectators will be diverted to parking at the Half Moon Bay Airport and the harbor. Parking in those lots will be $15.

"Let's all work together to keep the impact as small as possible," said Kathy Clark, a contest organizer. "We want to try to discourage people from coming out in crowds."

Instead, fans can watch the contest live on the Web. CBS.com promises "exclusive" live coverage. Organizers told the Review Thursday it would also be available on a MySpace page. Visit www.maverickssurf.com for details and the Web address.

The contest will also be shown live at AT&T Park. Tickets to watch the action there will set you back $25.

The Mavericks host a blood drive today and Sunday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the AT&T Plaza on the South side of American Airlines Center. Former Mav Rolando Blackman will sign autographs at noon today. Every donor is entered into a drawing to win Mavs tickets and autographed merchandise.

Flea, Skindog and Twiggy are itching to go. The Super Bowl of big wave surfing, the Maverick's Surf Contest, begins at 10 a.m. (CST) today in the waters of Half Moon Bay, south of San Francisco. Twenty-four surfers with their colorful nicknames paddle out to ride 30- to 50-foot wave faces and hope to bag the $30,000 first prize. See the competitors and view a live Webcast of the event at www.maverickssurf.com.
